No matter if you’re moving across the city or moving a long distance, preparing for a move can be a daunting responsibility.
To help you address the process with ease, here is the following moving checklist.
How to Prepare One Month Prior to Moving Day
- If you are planning on moving in the summer, you might want to call the movers two months in a head of time to guarantee availability on your requested moving day.
- Order moving boxes and packing supplies.
- Start packing. Plainly label boxes with name, the box destination (for instance “BR” for bathroom, “UBR” for upstairs bathroom) and contents, and check out YouTube for videos for additional moving and packing tips.
- Sort, discard responsibly, and donate undesirable items.
- Inform the USPS.
- Inform your eye doctor, dentist, and other healthcare service providers.
- Inform the HR and/or payroll at your place of work.
- Verify elevator, and parking permits for moving day at both present and final destination addresses.
How to Prepare Two Weeks Prior to Moving Day
- Arrange for disassembly of specialized items (pianos, children’s playsets, etc.).
- Arrange for childcare and/or a pet sittings service for moving day.
- Arrange for time off of work to get ready for the move and to be there on moving day.
- Inform your local DMV for change of address on your state issued driver’s license or state issued ID.
- Inform the required utility companies: electric, telephone, cell phone, gas (additionally, schedule gas appliances to get disconnected), satellite, home security/alarm, ISP, water.
How to Prepare One Week Prior to Moving Day
- Pack loose and fragile items from drawers into the moving boxes.
- Verify your moving day and time with the moving company. The moving companies’ moving coordinators are going to contact you 1 to 3 days before your move to guarantee all details are correct for moving day.
- Fill out the high-value inventory form (from the initial documentation sent by your moving coordinator) and select the proper valuation (transport insurance) alternative. The moving companies’ professionals are more than happy to help with this process.
- Remove all attached items you want to take from ceilings and walls, like ceiling fans, drapes, and light fixtures.
- Inform change of address with all literature to which you subscribe.
- Inform friends and family members with your new address.
How to Prepare One Day Prior Moving Day
- Collect clearly marked moving boxes of more vulnerable items in one space of the home. Inform the movers concerning these moving boxes on moving day.
- Ascertain furniture that is vulnerable or has been impaired by prior damage and notify your movers of the boxes on moving day.
- Keep apart and mark items that are not planned to be moved by your movers.
- Keep apart checkbooks, keys (old and new), passports, credit cards, plane tickets (if there are any), cash, and prescription medications. These must go with you in your personal vehicle on the day of the move.
- Defrost, drain, wash, and dry freezers and/ or refrigerators.
- Drain gas and oil from grass cutters, generators, etc.
- Disconnect propane tanks from gas grill. Your movers are not going to be able to transport the tank on moving day.
- Clear walkways and driveways throughout adverse weather conditions.
